Vampires Suck! 'Abigail' Review

I have to give credit to Universal. Within the span of 15 months, they have managed to provide audiences with two campy, modern horror films centering around a dancing antagonist in a child's body; 'M3GAN' and 'Abigail,' (with 'Abigail' being what I'm certain is the world's first horror movie with a villain that wears Golden Gooses.) I'm not sure if scary, dancing little girls are what is "in" right now, but I do honestly love how vaguely similar the premises of the two films are, yet were completely different and entertaining in their ways. Let's discuss 'Abigail:'

First things first, blood was everywhere! When I watch a vampire movie or any slasher film, I expect a generous amount of blood and guts, and this film certainly delivered on its special effects, showcasing a considerable amount of gore.

As for the cast and characters, Kathryn Newton and Angus Cloud gave amazing performances. It was disappointing for me that Angus Cloud's character had such little screen time, considering this was one of his last works before his death. The directors had a great time working with him, and you can read more about that here. Kathryn Newton, on the other hand, was an absolute delight to watch. She has definitely earned a spot among my favorite modern horror scream queens. Her charisma and humor brought charm to her character, providing a delightful amount of comedic relief. Additionally, I found Kevin Durand's portrayal and his character sooooooooooo sexy. Please hit me up if you look or act like him.

On the topic of sexiness, one aspect of the film that didn't quite sit well with me was the depiction of the vampires. I believe that adult vampires should have more sex appeal. While I understand it's a horror film, unattractive vampires just don't resonate with me, and I think the vampires were too ugly for me to take super seriously. I think it was mainly the unappealing teeth that threw me off.

Regarding the film's plot, I could somewhat anticipate what was going to happen, but the various twists and turns towards the end left me feeling somewhat "eh" at its conclusion.

Overall, it was an enjoyable and original film. While not particularly terrifying compared to most horror films, it offered plenty of fun, gore, and some laughs here and there. I'd rank it third for the year so far, trailing behind "Monkey Man" and "Lisa Frankenstein."
