To Sea or Not to Sea? Thoughts on The Little Mermaid

When I was a child, The Little Mermaid was a tale about a young girl with big ambitions looking to follow her dreams. Now that I'm a bit older, The Little Mermaid seems more like a tale of a stubborn teenage girl making poor decisions in order to follow the first guy she fell in love with. It sounds a little too much like my teenage years, but fishier.

The Little Mermaid movie was not a film that was on my list of movies to see this year, however, rainy weekends call for movies, and this seemed like the best option. In this blog, I will break down some of my thoughts on the film.

To be honest, I feel completely uninspired to write about this movie. Being that I'm not the target audience for this movie, I feel like I don't have a lot of room to bash this film. However, because I have opinions and I like to share them, I will bash on it anyways. This live-action Disney princess remake is unquestionably the most unremarkable and uninspired adaptation of its kind that I have had the misfortune of viewing. One of the most prominent issues I had with the movie was its subpar CGI effects. These visual effects were especially glaring during the climactic finale featuring Ursula, which fell short of my expectations in a rather disappointing manner. Additionally, the new songs introduced in the movie failed to leave any sort of lasting impression on me. I found them to be wholly unmemorable and lacking in any sense of artistic merit. All in all, while I may not be the intended audience for this film, I cannot help but feel underwhelmed by its lackluster execution.

In my personal opinion, the standout elements of this particular film are the exceptional performances delivered by Melissa McCarthy and Awkwafina. As a fan of Melissa McCarthy, I was thoroughly impressed by her portrayal of the quirky and entertaining Ursula. Awkwafina, on the other hand, is not an actress I typically follow, but her portrayal of Scuttle had me cracking up! Furthermore, I appreciated the fact that the filmmakers took the time to develop Prince Eric's character. In the original animated film, Prince Eric's character was relatively one-dimensional. Still, the live-action adaptation gave him more depth and allowed him to showcase a wider range of emotions and personality traits.

If you are looking to see The Little Mermaid live-action adaptation for some of that classic Disney nostalgia you got when you were a kid, I would skip this one. While I appreciate the diversity and representation that came with this film, generally, it is not worth your time or money.
