'The Monkey': A Surprisingly Fun Horror Comedy

I walked into this movie expecting your standard horror flick—you know, ghosts, jump scares, and whatnot—but was pleasantly surprised to find out that this was a horror comedy. And honestly? That twist made the movie so much better.

At first, I wasn’t sure if the film was trying to be serious and just failing miserably, or if it was in on the joke. That uncertainty made it even funnier once I realized that, yes, this was all intentional. The humor caught me off guard in the best way, and I had an enjoyable time with it. It was goofy, self-aware, and just the right amount of absurd.
One of the biggest highlights for me was the amazing performances from the cast, especially Theo James. I genuinely haven’t seen him in anything since Divergent, so it was awesome to see him take on a completely different kind of role here. He nailed it—his delivery, timing, and screen presence all added so much to the film. The entire cast brought their A-game, elevating the comedy while still making the horror moments hit when they needed to.
Beyond the laughs, I found myself kind of liking the movie’s message. I tend to look for deeper meanings in films—even when they might not be there—but that’s part of the fun of art, right? One quote, in particular, stuck with me: “Either everything is an accident, or nothing is an accident.” That line has been living in my head rent-free all week, especially when I think about it from a religious perspective.
All in all, this was a wildly entertaining ride, and I’d highly recommend checking it out while it’s still in theaters. If you love horror, comedy, or just having a good time at the movies, this one is worth your ticket.
Right now, I’ve seen three movies this year, and this one comfortably lands at #2 on my ranking. Not bad at all!
