Evil Dead Rise Movie Review (No Spoilers)

Many reboots and remakes of classic horror films in the 21st century have been a hit or miss for me. Some misses I have in mind include Halloween Kills (a horrible movie,) Jordan Peele's Candyman (hated it,) and Doctor Sleep (not the worst, but you really just can't beat/live up to The Shining.)

This movie was FAR from a miss for me. Althought I've only seen the original 1981 film in the franchise, I liked it enough that I was really excited when this film was announced. As far as horror movies go, this one was really great. It's scares consisted of genuine horror and not just jumpscares that are so common nowadays. I haven't had a horror movie make my skin crawl and make me want to hide inside my shirt like this one did in a very long time. The acting in this film was great, with Ellie and Kassie's characters standing out to me the most. The cinematography was exceptional, with it's use of the classic "Shaky Cam" that was used in the original movie. The pace of this movie was great as well, having me squirm around at the body horror at the edge of my seat the entire time.

My friend that I saw it with had never seen any of the movies, so we had two different perspectives on the movie. My friend described the movie as "good" and "very gorey." In her opinion is was "scary but also gross" with various body horror elements. She said that for a horror movie, it "had a plot that made sense" and "didn't need to see other movies to understand it," which was something she really appreciated.

As far as horror movie goes, this one was great. I highly recommend this horror movie. As previously mentioned, even if you haven't seem the originals, this one still catches you up to speed with the plot, so no need to worry. I highly recommend checking it out! For the full experience, try catching it while it is still in theaters!
