Cliches are the Real Scare: The Boogeyman Review (Spoiler Free)

I've been watching a lot of Modern Family recently, so I thought I needed to cleanse my palette with something less heartwarming and fun, so I decided to see The Boogeyman.

If you are looking for a movie that checks off the following modern horror movie cliches, this is the film for you:

  • A parent that has some stay-at-home job, (psychologist, artist, writer, etc.) like in Sinister.

  • A tragic death in the family, like in Midsommar or Hereditary

  • A dead loved one who provides some kind of assistance during the climax, like in Dark Shadows

  • An attempt to contact the dead, like in Insidious: Chapter 3

  • More things that I have failed to remember as the details of this movie flee my mind just hours after viewing it

As someone who deeply admires the literary genius of Stephen King, I was excited to see a cinematic interpretation of one of his short stories. However, upon exploring a brief summary of the plot, after the movie, I felt somewhat let down by the lack of content that the film seemed to offer compared to the original source material. I couldn't help but feel disappointed at the thought of a lackluster film adaptation of one of the works of one of my favorite authors.

While The Boogeyman had its moments of thrill, it failed to leave a lasting impression. As a lover of horror films, I couldn't help but feel a sense of disappointment. While not every film can be an instant classic, I was hoping for something more than a generic, run-of-the-mill horror flick. The scares were decent, but the overall lack of originality left me feeling unimpressed. It's frustrating to see the same recycled plotlines with different titles. As a result, I gave this film a lower rating for its lack of boldness and freshness. Hopefully, future horror films can break away from the mold and offer something truly unique. To put it bluntly, give me something bold and fresh in the horror genre, or give me nothing at all.,
