Can I Get One Barbie Ticket (and some tissues?)

Updated: Jan 22

Join me as I break down the biggest part of the Barbenheimer double feature and what is (definitely) the biggest summer blockbuster: Barbie!

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead

Michael Cera in Barbie (2023)

First off, why did I use a picture of Allan out of every possible still I could have used from this movie? Multiple reasons. First of all, it's my movie blog and I can do what I want. Second of all, Allan certainly stole the show. I love Michael Cera. If that man walked into my wedding ceremony one day, I would drop everything and leave with him. Michael Cera's awesomeness aside, his character Allan was fucking hilarious. While he didn't have too much screen time, he was certainly memorable.

Allan tangent aside, let's get back to our regularly scheduled movie review. To me, this is how the message of the movie felt like it went:

  • Barbie was living her best life in Barbie Land. She hung out with her girl boss best friends every day and had her man, Ken, as her accessory. It made me reminisce on playing with Barbies as a child and made me realize why the idea of Barbie Land was so appealing; because it was the opposite of the real world. I've had so many instances in relationships where I felt like I was just a severely less attractive Barbie accessory and I would just go anywhere and do whatever my Ken wanted me to.

  • Barbie starts getting hit with reality and goes with Ken (accidentally) to the real world. She discovered that the real world wasn't all she thought it was, and Ken thought this was the place of his dream (which really showed me that we are still living in a man's world, unfortunately)

  • Barbie returns to Barbie Land to find that Ken and his horse-loving patriarchy have taken over and ruined her way of life. Barbies are now the ones being treated as accessories and Ken's rule the world. Basically, it was like living in the 50s in the United States.

  • The movie ends with Barbie telling Ken to find his own sense of individuality, and in doing so, is able to move on and find herself. As someone who went through a big breakup this year and currently has a close friend going through one, this hit close to home. It is so hard to figure out who you are in life. I so often question my self-worth and wonder what I'm doing with my life. I look at all the other Barbie's and Ken's in the world and wish I had a special title like them. But, I think this movie showed us that that is the beauty in life. Sometimes, we are just ordinary Barbie's and Ken's: but that is so beautiful. It is so beautiful sometimes just to be what we perceive to be our ordinary lives. There are so many wonderful moments in our lives. Every happy, sad, angry, confusing, dazzling moment of our existence makes our ordinary lives amazing.

Going into this movie, much like every other woman in America, I was so excited. Overall, I was generally pleased with this film. It delivered on the fun it promised with tons of laughs with a huge, surprising side of tears due to the heartwarming plot. However, my biggest issue with this movie actually has to do with its marketing. With how many clips of the film were shoved in my face over the past few months, I feel like I saw half of the movie before I even entered the theater. Granted. the clips didn't reveal much of the plot, but I still felt like I was rewatching the movie when I was watching it for the first time. Primarily, that was my biggest problem with the film. I thought the characters, costumes, and set were stunning and insanely fun. I also hate to say this, but as much as I genuinely despise Will Ferell and think he's not funny, he cracked me up in this film.

This is not going to be a popular take with some people, but I actually liked Oppenheimer more than Barbie. Don't get me wrong, Barbie was great, but Oppenheimer exceeded more expectations for me than Barbie did, thus why it receives a higher ranking. I definitely recommend checking out this film though! Guys, go into this movie with an open mind. Girls, brace yourself.
